What is a muscle knot and why does it happen

Updated: Oct 1, 2019

Muscle knots, also called myofascial trigger points, are hard bump-like areas in the muscle that can be painful with or without pressure applied to it. Can cause the muscle to twitch and/or prodce less strength. It is your body's way of telling you something is wrong.

There are multiple ways of getting a muscle knot, some of which include:

- Over repetition

- Lifting something that is too heavy

- Improper posture

- Trauma over the muscles

The trauma to the muscle causes inflammation in the area. Inflammation triggers the body to create scar tissue. The scar tissue holds the muscle in a contracted position and adheres to the facia or other tissue beside it.
